What Is CBD Oil?
Cannabidiol, commonly know as CBD oil, is an extract from the cannabis plant. CBD interacts with the body's own endocannabinoid system, producing many effects including anti-inflammatory and painkilling benefits.
CBD is not psychoactive like THC - tetrahydrocannabinol - which means it does not produce any addictive sensations of euphoria, anxiety or paranoia. CBD is most often taken orally and can also be vaporized for a fast acting effect on certain parts of the body like the muscles and joints.
Water soluble molecules such as cannabinoids are small enough to enter the bloodstream by diffusion, whereas hydrocarbons and lipids cannot cross cell membranes easily. Thus, many of the beneficial effects of CBD can be felt throughout the body.
CBD has been used to help with a wide range of conditions including: Anxiety, stress, depression, chronic pain, inflammation, epilepsy and cancer.
Different Ways CBD Oil Can Be Used.
CBD oil can be inhaled by vaporizing it and breathing it in. This is the quickest way to feel the effects but also the shortest as its fast-acting and short-lived. Vaporizers which use a cartridge filled with CBD oil give you a similar sensation to smoking but without the same risks as smoking cannabis as there is no fire and second-hand effects.
CBD can be injected into the muscles, which allows it to go straight into your bloodstream for a fast-acting effect that can last from one to three hours.
Taken sublingually (under the tongue):
One of the benefits of CBD oil is that it can be taken sublingually. This means ingesting it under your tongue, which allows it to enter the bloodstream via the veins underneath. Swallowing CBD oil will not have an effect as you need to take it sublingually for it to be absorbed into your blood this way. It's also useful if you don't like the taste of CBD oil or if you have a condition which prevents you from swallowing.
Applied to the skin:
CBD can be applied directly to the skin in various forms, including balms and lotions. This has been found to work well on arthritis and other aches and pains where a fast-acting painkiller is needed.
CBD oil can be taken orally if it is combined with food or drinks. CBD will bind to fats which means it's best taken with something high in fat like milk, cream or yogurt. This will help the CBD to cross the membrane of the intestine to enter the blood stream and have an effect on the body.
CBD can also be taken orally in capsules and has the advantage of being a longer acting effect which lasts up to 12 hours once you take it. This makes it suitable for chronic conditions such as epilepsy, where seizures occur frequently over a long period of time. CBD may potentially help people suffering from addiction by helping them to cope with the stress and anxiety which they feel when trying to quit.
CBD can be safely taken with other treatments as it is safe at high doses with few side effects reported. It's also beneficial to take CBD oil alongside food, as this helps it cross the membrane of the intestine more easily, allowing it to enter the blood stream sooner.
Will CBD Oil Chill Me Out and Relax Me?
CBD oil has been reported to help a number of problems including: nausea, anxiety, chronic pain and insomnia. It is thought to help these in a range of ways such as by interacting with receptors in your brain and nervous system, or via the immune system. This means that CBD can have an effect on many different body systems which may be helpful for a range of medical problems.
It's thought that CBD reduces anxiety by changing the way neurotransmitters such as serotonin and glutamate work in your brain. Serotonin is often associated with feelings of happiness and relaxation, whereas high levels of glutamate are usually related to states such as stress and anxiety.
CBD may also make changes to how some nerve cells work by interacting with specific receptors on these cells. This may help reduce pain and improve how the brain processes pain signals. It might also explain why many recreational users say that CBD oil helps to calm them down and relax muscles.
CBD has been found to interact with cannabinoid receptors which are usually stimulated by naturally occurring compounds called endocannabinoids. These are produced by your body and help control many important body processes such as: pain, mood and memory.
CBD also appears to stop cells in the body from becoming too excited and possibly damaged, which further suggests that it may be useful for treating some nervous system disorders. This is still very early stage research but CBD could prove to be a very useful treatment indeed!
