What is CBG?
Cannabigerol (CBG) is one of the many chemicals found in both hemp and cannabis. It contains two of the most well-known, prevalent cannabinoids: tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA), which will convert to THC when burned or heated, and cannabidiolic acid (CBDA), which will convert to Cannabigerol (CBG) when burned or heated.
CBG is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid, but it does have many of the same medicinal benefits as THC and CBD. It has been shown to relieve convulsion, inflammation, anxiety, and nausea (expressed directly through CB1/CB2 receptors), while exhibiting antibiotic properties (specifically against MRSA, even in high doses). CBG flower also acts as an antioxidant and neuroprotectant (a chemical which preserves the structural integrity of neurons), making it useful for preventing many types of neurological damage. What Medical Benefit Does CBG Have?
One study injected cannabigerol (CBG) directly into the mice's hippocampus (the brain region responsible for seizures), and determined that it had an anticonvulsant effect. This demonstrates CBG's potential as a treatment for epilepsy, which is highly resistant to currently available treatments .
One study on mice found that cannabigerol (CBG) acted as an antidepressant on the rats tested, but with less sedative effects than diazepam (valium). This demonstrates CBG's potential as a treatment for depression and related mood disorders.
A study in 1995 found that cannabigerol (CBG) acted as an anti-inflammatory on mice with induced colitis, making it useful in the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease .
A more recent study examined the effects of cannabigerol (CBG) on arthritic rats, finding that it prevented joint swelling .
4. Neuroprotective (while also killing cancer cells)
One study found that CBG protected cultured mouse neurons from hydrogen peroxide-induced oxidative damage better than both CBD and THC , making it especially promising as a treatment for neurodegenerative diseases (such as Parkinson's).
Another study found that CBG induced programmed cell death in glioma cells (brain tumors) .
5. Anti-proliferative action against cancer cells
Another study found that CBG strongly inhibited the proliferation of various cancer cell lines , including cervical cancer (HeLa), breast carcinoma (MCF-7), and oral cancer cells.
Yet another study showed that CBG has antibacterial properties, especially against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains .
7. Anti-tumoral action
Cannabigerol (CBG) has been shown to limit the growth of various types of cancerous cells in mice, including hepatocellular carcinoma, breast adenocarcinoma, and colorectal adenocarcinoma.
8. Treatment for psoriasis
One study found that cannabigerol (CBG) has potential as a treatment for psoriasis .
9. Bone Stimulant
One study found that CBG had a beneficial effect on bone health , suggesting it can be used to prevent osteoporosis.
10. Treatment for degenerative disc disease
One study reported that cannabigerol (CBG) reduced pain in patients with disc herniation . It is thought that cannabigerol's (CBG) anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and analgesic actions may have been responsible for this effect.
A study on mice with disc herniation found that CBG was more effective than diclofenac or paracetamol at reducing pain .
It should be noted that the other major cannabinoids (THC, CBD) were not included in either study.
11. Anti-insomnia action
It may be possible to use CBG as a non-addictive alternative to benzodiazepine drugs such as Xanax for the treatment of insomnia .

One study found that CBG protected cultured mouse neurons from the nerve damage caused by HIV .
13. Protection from nerve damage in general
A study on rat brain cells found that CBG prevented programmed cell death, indicating it may have neuroprotective properties useful for treating neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease .
14. Appetite stimulant (via CB1 activation)
One study found that CBG stimulated appetite in rats , making it potentially useful for treating cachexia.
15. Anti-bacterial action against MRSA
One study showed that CBG has antibacterial effects against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) .
CBG Shows Promise In The Medical Field
